What is Baptism?

Here at WDBC, we encourage all who put their faith in Jesus to be baptised, as a public demonstration of their commitment to God to live a new life in Him.

Baptism involves full immersed in water, sybolising death to a believer’s old ways and new life in Jesus.

What baptism is NOT.

Baptism is not something you have to do in order to be saved, nor does the act itself save you, or make you a Christian.

Why we baptise

There are three main reasons that we baptise at WDBC:

  1. Jesus asked us to - it’s a act of obedience

”Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matt 28:19-20)

  2. Baptism is a public demonstration of what’s happening in our hearts.
We’ve turned away from sin and living our own way, and we’ve committed to following Jesus.

”You are the light of the world - like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.” (Matt 5:14-15)

  3. Baptism is a way that we symbolicly preach the gospel.
We are showing in a physical dimension what is true in the spiritual dimension. When we baptise someone, we testify that through Jesus’ death and ressurrection, God has put their old self to death and they are hopeful in experiencing the new resurrection life that is only found in Him.

”My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Gal 2:20)
